Thirty years ago, I started a career in the fitness industry as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. During that time, I worked in many sectors of the industry and became a Master trainer of fitness leaders. Advocacy played a big role in my career and as such I became actively involved in molding the direction of fitness by being part of the board of directors for the BC Recreation and Parks Association, and abroad as the first Woman and Canadian to be part of the advisory board for the American Council on Exercise.
As the years went by my clients would speak to me about their mental health struggles. Struggles with body image, eating disorders, inner critiques, low self-esteem, inner critics, trauma, anxiety, depression and much more. I wanted to be able to help these individuals, but I recognized their issues were outside my scope of practice, education, and knowledge. Not satisfied by this limitation and wanting a new challenge for myself, I decided, at age 46, to go back to school and add a master’s degree in counselling psychology to my tool kit. While I love fitness and will always remain involved in the industry, I am happy to make this career shift and truly be able to bring together both the mind and the body in my work.
What I bring to our sessions is my vast knowledge, experience, and expertise from thirty years of living and breathing health and fitness coupled with a solid foundation of psychology so we can truly integrate the body-mind experience into our sessions. I am a certified, trauma-informed yoga instructor with a personal mindful meditation practice. It is important for you to know I practice the tools I offer my clients because I know how beneficial they are. I am trained in EMDR which is a trauma focussed therapy and proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
My philosophy for counselling is based on the belief that you are the expert in your own life and truly know what is best for you. You came equipped with all you need to thrive in this life. Counselling can help you to uncover what is already there, especially when you hit inevitable bumps in life. Therapy is a collaboration, and it would be my honour to collaborate with you to get your mental health back on track.
However, I am not all about academia and work. I have a sense of humor and I like to use it when appropriate in therapy. Some issues are difficult to discuss, and humor can be used as a form of healing. I enjoy time in nature, time by myself, reading, golf, pickle ball and any activity where I get to move my body.
